Career Summary
Carl Voss is a man of firsts. Voss was the first player signed by Conn Smythe to a professional contract after his purchase of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Marlboros, the National Hockey League’s first Rookie of the Year during the 1932-33 regular season, and the first player on the Toronto Marlies Ring of Honour.
Born in Chelsea, Massachusetts on January 6, 1907, he was a talented football and hockey player. Voss played 6 games for the Toronto Marlboros, scoring no goals, and earning no points during his stint with the team. Although his presence was not felt on the ice with the Marlboros, Voss played for the the Toronto Falcons, London Panthers, and the Buffalo Bisons, even leading the Bisons to the lHL league championship and topping the scoring list for the season in 1931-1932.
As an NHL player, Voss played for the Toronto St. Pat’s and Toronto Maple Leafs for 14 games between 1926 and 1929 and finally found a permanent spot on an NHL roster with the New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings during the 1932-33 regular season. In addition to these team, Voss also played on the Ottawa Senators, the St. Louis Eagles, New York Americans, Montreal Maroons, and finished his playing career with the Chicago Blackhawks.
After Voss’ playing career ended, he joined CCM and was a referee for several minor hockey leagues, including the AHL before bcoming the head referee for the National Hockey League in 1950. Voss made officiating his top concern striving for improvements to the way referees called the hockey games they officiated through ongoing training. For his efforts, Voss was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a Builder in 1974. |
